Why breast imaging is important

When it comes to beating breast cancer, early detection is vital. Routine screening with a yearly mammogram starting at 40 years old increases the chance of survival. When breast cancer is caught early, women have more treatment options and better outcomes.

  • Women 40 years old and older should have a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year.
  • Women between 20 and 40 years old should have a clinical breast exam every three years.
  • Women in their 20s should conduct monthly breast self-exams.

Breast cancer screening

Our Trident Health system facilities all offer 3D mammograms, which combine multiple breast X-rays to create a three-dimensional picture of the breast. This type of mammography can reduce the need for additional imaging services and can find tumors that regular mammograms cannot.
